With recent changes to the Gmail themes, there are precious few ways to make the interface more friendly for partially-sighted users, so I've attempted to created some themes to help.

Here are some instructions to get set up.

We'll be:

  1. Installing a high contrast theme for Google Chrome.
  2. high contrast chrome theme screenshot - a black, yellow and blue chrome theme for users with low vision.
  3. Setting a high contrast theme on Gmail.
  4. high contrast gee mail screenshot - a black and yellow gee mail theme for users with low vision.

Installing a high contrast theme for Google Chrome.

  1. Go to the Chrome store download page for my yellow high contrast theme.

  2. Read the details, to give you a feel for what it does, then select the blue "Free" button in the top right corner.

  3. The button will momentarily say "checking...", before applying the theme and saying "Added to chrome".

The high contrast theme for chrome should now be installed.

To restore your default theme use the settings icon (top right of the browser) then "Settings". Under "Appearance" select the "Reset to default theme" button.

Setting a high contrast theme on Gmail.

  1. First, the Stylish App for Chrome is required. Download the Stylish app from the Chrome web store, and read the details, to give you a feel for what it does. Then select the blue "Free" button in the top right corner.

  2. A box will open up saying that this application will have access to your data. This is necessary for it to work. If you're happy, select the "Add" button.

  3. The button will momentarily say "checking...", before applying the theme and saying "Added to chrome".

  4. A colourful "S" icon will appear on the browser toolbar.

  5. The final step is to download and install the yellow high contrast gmail styles from the userstyles.org website.

  6. Read the description, and Select "install with stylish". A confirmation box will open up, select "OK".

  7. Go to gmail and have a look around, the style should be applied, if not, refresh the page.

To restore your usual styles, select the "S" icon you just installed on the browser toolbar in step 5. Then select "disable". If you like, you can remove the Stylish extension from chrome in the settings menu.

This is all work in progress, and the Gmail theme in particular will have small aesthetic issues.

Please feedback all you can. I'm hoping this will help a few more people to access Gmail and Chrome, and I'll improve it as time goes by!
